Pelé was hospitalized for reassessment of chemotherapy therapy in the face of a tumor in the colon, in addition to the treatment of a respiratory infection. Cancer was identified in 2021, and the tumor was removed in September of the same year. Since then, the King of Football has undergone chemotherapy treatment, with regular trips to the hospital.
In 1980, a jury made up of sports journalists elected Pelé the Athlete of the Century.
