The lawyer and international analyst, Pedro Sittón, referred this Tuesday afternoon to the participation of the president, Laurentino Cortizo in the UN Climate Change Summit, which is held in the city of Glasgow, Scotland.
He considered this to have been a very regrettable and depressing presidential tour. “I think the president has spent his time and effort going to Glasgow having a country in crisis, not only a product of the pandemic but also an economic one and a product of the political crisis in various sectors that have mobilized,” he said.
He stated that this is a first “blow” to show the public how little the president matters, who has taken a “vacation in Europe”, thus, starting the official tourism cycle of the entire delegation that accompanied him, “senior officials who had not been able to go on a trip and have done so at this appointment “.
In the opinion of the lawyer, the meeting in Glasgow in the face of the current situation that our country is going through has been in vain because they are not very productive in the face of the international image that we have and that has been shaken by the “Panama and Pandora Papers” and the need for investments to lift this country.
Regarding the meetings that President Cortizo had planned, the lawyer assured that the most important meeting was not with Joe Biden, president of the United States, on the contrary, it was with billionaire Jeff Bezos, who promised a series of money for the countries that they invested in the climate and “it turns out that the president delegates this meeting to his minister of Foreign Affairs, that is regrettable because the president of Ecuador, the president of Colombia, of Costa Rica was there, where they showed their interest in the presence of this investor. In order for it to produce these investments, that is, the most important thing that the president could have done was delegated to the Minister of Foreign Relations ”.
He added that Cortizo never met with Biden as he had announced in his busy schedule. “His main theme (Cortizo) was irregular migrants, we really see that there is a government with a totally different approach to our political reality. The most important meeting was with Jeff Bezos, there were all the Latin American presidents, except the Panamanian. One must ask why the Panamanian president was not at that meeting? It is that he went shopping. I think the Presidency of the Republic can answer that, ”Sittón stressed.
The jurist also made mention of Cortizo’s speech during the COP26 summit and described it as “contradictory”, after the president expressed that he began by respecting the native peoples who preserve the environment. “It was contradictory because on the same date that he was speaking in Glasgow they repressed indigenous people in the area of the Barro Blanco hydroelectric plant, it was an incoherent speech that what he should have done was to stay in Panama, attend to and resolve issues such as what happened in Columbus, which is a boiler, and not taking a small vacation for these sacred dates such as national days, was unnecessary, ”he stressed.
He added that once again this government demonstrated the contempt that the ruling political class has to the detriment of the population.
“We can say that we do not need President Cortizo because he has already shown that he can telecommute and this country is going on a pilot plan. I do not see a president committed to solving structural problems, the president should have planned a trip to bring investments and establish strong relationships with French and German investors, but not go to make a protocol such as official tourism, “he said.
