Pedro Sánchez estimates to speak personally with Edmundo González Urrutia at the end of the week, specifically between Thursday and Friday

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez confirmed on Tuesday, September 10, that he plans to meet in the coming days with opposition presidential candidate Edmundo González Urrutia, after he arrived in the Iberian nation after being granted political asylum.

Sánchez said this from China, where he inaugurated a branch of the Cervantes Institute in Shanghai, and said that any interpretation made of González Urrutia’s presence in Spain is “inappropriate” because it is in itself a question of humanity.

In this regard, he stressed that the meeting with the ambassador will take place upon his return from the Asian nation; therefore, it could take place between Thursday or Friday, depending on the time he arrives in Madrid.

He said he wants to know details about the condition of González Urrutia, as well as his family.

The night of the Monday, September 9thPresident Nicolás Maduro told the exiled politician that he respects his decision to request asylum in Spain.

“I have all my respect for the decision you have taken. I can tell Ambassador González Urrutia, with whom I have had a tough confrontation since July 29, that I have been paying close attention to all of this and I understand the step you have taken and I respect it,” said Maduro.

He also wished him “good luck on his path and in his new life.” He assured that the opposition leader’s wishes “for peace and harmony for the country” would be fulfilled and that peace would reign above all else.

Spain’s Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares said on the morning of Monday, September 9th that there was no negotiation nor was any demand made with the Venezuelan authorities to facilitate the departure of opposition presidential candidate Edmundo González Urrutia to Madrid as an asylum seeker.

“There has been no political negotiation between the Spanish government and the Venezuelan government. In other words, there has been no compensation for Edmundo González to be able to leave,” he said.
