Pedro Castillo will remain in prison. Supreme Court of Peru denies appeal

After a hearing in which the legal defense team of the former president of Peru, Pedro Castillo, sought to appeal the preliminary detention measure of seven days issued against him, due to an investigation of rebellion, after attempting a failed self-coup, on the 7th of December, the Supreme Court of Justice of that country rejected the appeal presented and decided to maintain the arrest.

According to the highest body of Justice, the appeal was declared “unfounded”, considering that the agreed period of seven days “is the rational and agreed”.

Meanwhile, Castillo will remain detained in the prison of the Special Operations Directorate of the Peruvian Police, awaiting his release, which should end on December 14.

However, it is expected that the judicial authorities will request the preventive detention measure.

It is important to mention that during the hearing, Castillo maintained that he did not commit any crime of conspiracy or rebellion.

“I am unfairly and arbitrarily detained, I am not a thief, a rapist, or corrupt or a thug,” he said.
