“My solidarity with Dr. Betssy. You have seen that there is no crime here. Only my solidarity. DOCTOR STRENGTH, FORCE COMPATRIETS. Peru has to open your eyes because we have been blinded, there is necessity. Peru needs urgent, a deworming and purgative,” he said.
Castillo’s gesture is produced in the midst of a judicial process that seeks to determine criminal responsibility for the failed coup d’etat of December 7, 2022. The Prosecutor’s Office argues that both Castillo and Chávez acted in a concerted manner to break the constitutional order, while their defenses allege political persecution and an attempt to neutralize left through the courts.
The case has gained a new dimension with the protest undertaken by Betssy Chávez within the Chorrillos Women Prison. The former congressman initiated a hunger strike and came to declare a dry strike to denounce harassment, abuse and arbitrary restrictions against him and against witnesses of his process. Although he raised the measure temporarily for 48 hours, he demanded to be transferred to the Virgen de Fatima prison together with two witnesses, in addition to the dismissal of three penitentiary officials to which he holds abuse.
