Madrid Spain.- This September 20 marks the 13th anniversary of more than a million people gathering in Havana to witness the controversial concert organized by Colombian singer Juanes, as part of his “Peace without Borders” project.
That day, Cubans on the island enjoyed the historic show, which began at 2:00 in the afternoon with the Puerto Rican Olga Tañón and closed with the popular song “Chan Chan”, by Compay Segundo, performed by the Cuban Van Van orchestra.
For him scenery 15 artists passed by, including Miguel Bosé, Luis Eduardo Aute, Danny Rivera, Jovanotti, Cucú Diamantes, Carlos Varela, X Alfonso and the Orishas group.
The Cubans, who rarely have the opportunity to see international artists live, despite the heat, remained in the place during the five hours that the concert lasted.
However, Cuban intellectuals, artists and exiles expressed their rejection of the concert, alleging that it was a way to legitimize the Cuban dictatorship, and asked that if it were held, it be held for the freedom of political prisoners; as well as criticized that the chosen place was the Plaza de la Revolución, a place established by the regime for the celebration of its acts.
Many of the singers invited by Juanes decided not to attend, and even the Colombian himself considered the possibility of suspending the concert.
Faced with the controversy, Juanes declared to the television program “Aquí y Ahora”, on the US network Univisión: “Going to Cuba is a symbol that it is time to change minds, an opportunity to tell the world that people have to change. ”, and insisted that he had no political intentions, but to carry a message of change.
