Paysandú official linked to Mayor Olivera’s sector was convicted of drug trafficking

Paysandú official linked to Mayor Olivera's sector was convicted of drug trafficking

As reported by journalist Eduardo Preve on the social network

Álvarez, 29 years old, ranked 57th on the National Party’s 51st list, led by Mayor Nicolás Olivera, and worked in the commune’s lighting area. He had entered the mayor’s office through an agreement with the National Directorate of Released Persons (Dinali), designed to facilitate the labor reintegration of people with criminal records.

After admitting his responsibility, the official reached an abbreviated agreement with the Prosecutor’s Office and was sentenced to two years and ten months in prison. Olivera, in statements to the Arriba Gente program on Channel 10, indicated that he did not have a direct relationship with Álvarez and denied that he was his driver or a trusted person.

The mayor described the case as an “unfortunate” example that second chances are not always taken advantage of. «He entered under a reintegration modality. Unfortunately, he betrayed that trust,” said Olivera, who also defended the labor reintegration policy despite criticism.

Olivera, who will take over as senator after being elected as Luis Lacalle Pou’s substitute, stated that this incident does not affect his image or municipal management. In addition, he confirmed that he will seek a second term as mayor of Paysandú in the departmental elections next May.
