Mexico City, Mexico.- The documentary “The Padilla case“, of Pavel Giroud, got Yesterday, April 22, the award in the category of Best Documentary Film of the 2023 Platino Ibero-American Film Awards.
At the time of receiving the award, the Cuban filmmaker recounted that his film “is the story of a poet who was imprisoned in 1971, because of his rebellious work, and was later forced to publicly retract his work. The worst thing about it is that, more than half a century later, the same thing continues to happen in my country,” Giroud said in his acceptance speech.
The director added that Cuba is more than that world of color and rhythms that is shown to the world. There is another gray Cuba that suffers, and part of it is what is shown in his audiovisual. The artist thanked the jury for voting in favor of “El Caso Padilla”.
“I want to thank you, on behalf of the Cubans who are fed up with the fact that our country is a theme park of an ideology or a utopia, and that the pain of Cubans does not have the same force as the pain of other nations that have suffered totalitarian regimes”, concluded the director, amid loud applause.
In the audience, listening to Giroud’s words, was the renowned Cuban actor Jorge Perugorría with his wife.
‘El caso Padilla’ receives the Platinum Award for ‘Best Documentary Film’.

With unpublished images, the film investigates the repressive process of Castroism against the poet Heberto Padilla. Whose crime was to think and write freely within a dictatorship. After interrogations and multiple pressures, Padilla was forced to carry out a mea culpa, where he even denounced close friends and his own wife as “counterrevolutionary” people.
This 78-minute Cuban-Spanish co-production was the only film that received a nomination for this edition of the Platinum Awards.
