The Nobel Prize in Economics Paul Krugman declared that the Trump administration is about to “immobilize the economy” with its offensive against immigrants.
“I worry, and I should worry everyone, see how a huge expansion of this deeply anti -American organization could be used as a tool of presidential power and repression,” he said about the Immigration and Customs Control Service (ICE).
“In addition, if people are given unimportant,” and it is difficult to give a better example than masked and unidentified agents authorized to use force – some will abuse their position.
“From what ICE has been doing, what kind of people do they think they are probable as they expand massively?”
“In comparison to these problems, concerns about the economic impact of mass deportations are definitely secondary. But they are still important, and an issue of which I have knowledge.”
Krugman argued that the massive loss of immigrant workers in the United States would cause a negative economic disturbance because “they are not distributed equally throughout the economy.”

“They are strongly concentrated in certain industries and occupations, where they constitute a large part, sometimes most of the workforce.”
“As a result, the recent expulsion edict of the Trump administration will be much more detrimental to the economy than the total number of deported workers could suggest,” he added.
In the first months of Trump’s second term, drastic measures have been taken against immigration.
The new director of the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) declared in an interview with the New York Times that the Administration would implement changes in the visa system for qualified workers and seek to harden the exam to obtain US citizenship.
The Secretary of National Security, Kristi Noem, said last week: “The world has heard our message: if you are in the United States without documents, go now!”
“In less than 200 days, 1.6 million immigrants without documents have abandoned the United States. With President Trump, we now have safer streets, better jobs for Americans and less pressure on schools, hospitals and social services, he added.
Krugman said that “undocumented immigrants represent about 5 % of the US workforce. It seems plausible that a significant fraction of these workers is forced to leave.”
“Losing a large number of workers seems to be harmful to the US economy. In fact, it will be worse than they imagine,” he concluded.
