The capital of Nariño was one of those selected by the Ministry of Culture to represent Colombia in ‘Expo Dubái’ and the Pasto Varnish will be present to participate in this important international exhibition.
The Mopa Grass Varnish – Mopa is known as a manifestation of intangible cultural heritage. This recognition was made in 2020 by UNESCO.
This trade consists of the decoration of wooden objects, with thin colored and cut sheets.
The materials are obtained by processing the vegetable resin produced by the Mopa-Mopa buds, in the humid forests of Putumayo.
Not only will there be a demonstration of this craft, they will also bring their own products.
Teacher Representatives
There are two artisans selected to represent La Gran Capital this March 10.
Teacher Mary Ortega has been practicing the trade she learned from her father-in-law, teacher Lester Narváez, in the Obrero neighborhood of San Juan de Pasto for 29 years.
And the teacher Richard Valderrama, who learned the technique from his parents. He is currently dedicated to the development of Mopa Mopa Grass Varnish designs.
“I am very grateful to the Ministry of Culture, which was the entity in charge of making this dream possible. We have been waiting for an opportunity like this for many years,” said Mary Ortega.
