Pasto, Barranquilla and Bogotá, with the best public schools

2020 represented a challenge for education: closed schools, impromptu remote classes, and a new school environment at home. These characteristics aroused interest in measuring, beyond performance, the quality of teaching in the country’s public schools.

Thus, the new index ‘Read Your School’ of the Laboratory of Economics of Education (LEE) of the Javeriana University, which scrutinizes important aspects of the education of more than 8,000 public schools, found that 39% of the official institutions of the country have a high performance in educational quality40%, a medium performance and 21% have a low performance.

It should be noted that this multidimensional index measures performance from 0 to 110 points. So the best schools are those who exceed the threshold of 70 pointsthose with medium performance, between 70 and 50 points, and those that do not reach this threshold are classified as low quality institutions.

In that order of ideas, the departments with the largest number of establishments within the Top 100 official schools with better performance in the index are: Bogotá, with 13 schools with high quality; Santander (12 institutions) and Norte de Santander (12 establishments).

However, there are departments in the country with zero establishments that reach an optimal level of quality, such as: Amazonas, Vaupés, Archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina, Chocó, Guainía, La Guajira, Guaviare, Sucre and Vichada.
This index also highlighted the best schools in the country, qualifying dimensions such as: performance in the saber 11 tests, improvement in their scores, quality of teachers, levels of English and connection, and inclusion within the establishment.

According to the ‘Read Your School’ index, the best public school in the country is the Integrated Baccalaureate Lyceum University of Nariño, located in Pasto. This institution is characterized by its performance in English and connectivity of 92.99 points out of 100. In addition, it has a good team of teachers, and an adequate relationship between students and teachers. As well as a good indicator of course size. In this quality, the school obtained a score of 78.40 points.

The second school with the best educational quality was: IAlexander Von Humboldt District Educational Institution, from Barranquilla. This center has a good level of improvement in the Saber 11 tests, which means that its score has evolved, so in this dimension it obtained a score of 91.63. Another of the characteristics that makes this school recognized for its educational quality is the permanence and well-being of its students, which reflects that in this institution, the majority of students manage to pass their degrees and, furthermore, there are low or no levels of Student desertion.

In short, this establishment is also characterized by having a good performance in social and civic competences.

Continuing with the ranking, the third and fourth places go to two schools in Bogotá: the High School of the Homeland Army North Sector B and the Arturo Ramírez Montúfar Pedagogical Institute.The Liceo stood out for its excellent performance in the Saber 11 Tests, only 8 points below 100. While the Pedagogical Institute has an excellent level in inclusion of students from diverse strata, ethnic groups, or with disabilities, in addition to a good teaching staff.

Now, fifth place goes to National Technical Institute of Commercein Cúcuta, with an outstanding performance in Saber 11 (90.75) and in English and connectivity, with a score of 81.11.

The General Serviez Lyceum, from Villavicencio, and Colegio Santo Ángel, from Cúcuta, occupied the sixth and seventh positions in the classification. In the case of the institution in the capital of Meta, its position is due to its performance in English and its access to connectivity. In that order of ideas, the school enjoys good computer facilities, with a proper ICT plan for the institution.

As for the distinction of Holy Angel Collegethe Javeriana index indicated that this institution has a balance between three dimensions evaluated by this ranking: quality of teachers (63.65 points), inclusion in the student population (55.36) and performance in English and access to classrooms. computing (71.73).

Regarding the three remaining places in this list of 10, they are: The San José de la Salle Institute, in Bucaramanga, which stands out for its performance in the Saber 11 tests and its performance in English; the District Educational Institution of Pedagogical Experiences, of Barranquilla, with a balance between the student welfare and the quality of its teachers; and in last place is the Central Technical Institute of Bogotá, with access to computer rooms and a good score in the area of ​​English.
