Pasolini celebrates in Havana

Italian filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini, who died in 1975, has since March 2 a tribute for his centennial in Havana whose work in general, including “Accattone” (1961), his debut, “Mamma Roma” (1962) and “Il Decameron” (1970) had in the decades of the 60’s and 70’s great public impact in its cinemas.

All Pasolini’s films will be screened in two Havana rooms 23 and 12 and Charles Chaplin of the Pasolini Centennial Festival until March 13.

The cycle was organized by the Cinematheque of Cuba, an entity founded in 1960 by the Cuban state, and the Italian Embassy.

“Almost 47 years have passed since the early morning of November 2, 1975, when the lifeless body of Pier Paolo Pasolini was found by a woman in a vacant lot next to the beach of Ostia, a few kilometers from Rome” recalls an accompanying review the description of each film that will be screened.

He narrated that the artist’s murder has not been clarified and despite the fact that one person was convicted of the act “there was talk of a plot. The filmmaker had enemies everywhere due to his critical, heterodox and transgressive attitude,” he estimated.

Pasolini’s films were among the most anticipated in Havana in the 1960s and 1970s, according to local chroniclers at the time. His character, Accatone, impressed him socially and gained fame in the Cuban capital in those years.

The review that accompanies the synopses of the films that will be exhibited highlighted the CartelON Project, which, under the auspices of the Italian Embassy in Cuba and the collaboration of the Cuban Cinematheque, brought together Cuban designers, students from the Superior Institute of Design (lSDI) and Cuban graphic lovers to participate in the poster contest in tribute to Pasolini.

The contest was held last year and the awards for the winning posters took place during the 23rd week of Italian culture last November, he disclosed.
