The Communist Party of Venezuela pointed out that since the moment of Enrique Márquez’s arbitrary detention there has been no official information on his legal situation. Centrados called for the review of all cases and the release of political prisoners “as a gesture of political will that allows social tensions to be alleviated and allows progress towards true national reconciliation.”
The Communist Party of Venezuela (PCV) and Centered on People demanded this Wednesday the release of former presidential candidate Enrique Márquez, detained for a year at the headquarters of the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service (Sebin) known as El Helicoide after his arbitrary arrest.
In a statementthe PCV pointed out that since the moment of his arrest there has been no official information about the legal situation of the former rector of the National Electoral Council.
Enrique Márquez was arrested on January 7, 2025 when he was with his wife. He was in forced disappearance until his relatives were able to confirm that he was in that place. On October 9, his wife was able to see him for the first time in prison and stated that the former deputy was “in perfect health, strong, firm and more convinced than ever of his principles and values.”
The organization recalled that Márquez, together with other organizations, since 2024 “had sustained a line of public and sustained action aimed at building a political and constitutional solution to the profound crisis of legitimacy” after the ignorance of the results of the presidential elections announced by the CNE, giving Nicolás Maduro as the winner.
«The arrest of Enrique Márquez is not an isolated event, but is part of an unprecedented repressive escalation that has marked the political life of the country during the last year and a half. Far from being resolved, the Venezuelan political crisis has deepened, accompanied by an accelerated deterioration of democratic guarantees and fundamental rights,” said the PCV.
The communist party demanded a “general and immediate amnesty” for those detained “arbitrarily for defending constitutional rights.”
For its part, Centrados also requested your statement the review of all cases and the release of political prisoners “as a gesture of political will that allows alleviating social tensions and allowing progress towards true national reconciliation.” They also demanded “full respect” for due process and the fundamental guarantees established in the Constitution.
