Parties analyze 12 names as candidates to integrate the Human Rights Institution

This Monday will be the deadline for the presentation, before Parliament, of the candidates for the renewal of the director of the National Human Rights Institution (INDDHH), which, for the first time, will have a majority conformation designated by the parties that make up the current coalition. of government. The General Assembly has so far received the nomination of twelve people, promoted by legislators, political sectors and social organizations. None of them correspond to any of the current owners of that body.

The first candidate to be added to the list, which he agreed to The Observer, it was Xavier Palummo. Vice President of the Advisory Committee of the United Nations Human Rights Council, it is sponsored by Gurises Unidos, Mundo Afro, Último Recurso and Data Uruguay. Another of those who intends to be appointed is Robert Parrado. Security specialist and current adviser to the Ministry of the Interior, his name was presented by the National Party. The whites also presented the name of Gabriela Fulk, the former president of the board of directors of the National Institution for Adolescent Social Inclusion (Inisa) and of Sandra Rivas Zaglio.

In Cabildo Abierto, the confirmed candidate is Bernardo Legnani Piriz, Member of the International Association of Family Law Jurists. The Colorados, together with the organization Manos Veneguayas and Deres, presented the name of Maria Jimena Fernandez Bonelli. That party also presented the former deputy Gloria Robina.

For his part, the activist Oscar Rorra Rodriguez It is promoted by the organizations Atabaque, Instituto Raíces Afro, Mundo Afro and Acsun. Meanwhile, the current head of the Ombudsman for the Neighbor of Montevideo, Anna Agostino, intends to enter the institution on behalf of many other social entities. Among others, her name was presented by the Latin American Center for Human Economy (CLAEH), Anong, Gurises Unidos and Cotidiano Mujer.

The former head of the National Directorate of the Liberated (Dinali) Jaime Saavedra, Anong, El Abrojo, Red de Amigos de Luis Pérez Aguirre and the Association of Victims of Violence (Asfavide) are running. Finally, other organizations, such as the Association of Friends of the Afro-Uruguayan Culture House, nominated Juan Tabaré Martínez Videla.

The new directors will emerge from the vote with special majorities of each chamber of the General Assembly. The government coalition intends to reserve the right to nominate four of the five future leaders. The political agreement implies that the nationalists will define two names, while the colorados and lobbyists will designate one each. The fifth director will remain in the hands of the Broad Front.

It is a distribution that has been generating a harsh controversy.
