More than 50 Nicaraguans declared stateless by the dictatorship of Daniel Ortega issued a statement addressed to the United Nations Organization (UN), denouncing the “civil, political and economic” onslaught of the Sandinista regime against them with the snatching of their nationality and occupation of goods within the country.

«We reject the stripping of our nationality, and the unexpected measures taken by the dictatorship against us, such as: the stripping of property; the elimination of our inscriptions in the Civil Registry of people, with all its consequences, and the theft of retirement pensions. We ask the Human Rights Council to continue giving priority attention to the dramatic situation in Nicaragua,” the document states.

The statement addressed to the United Nations Human Rights Council, the UN Secretary General and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights contains the signatures of 56 citizens denationalized by the Nicaraguan dictatorship, including poets, lawyers, defenders human rights activists, economists, journalists and activists.

Therefore, they demand “to insist on the unconditional release of all remaining political prisoners, including Monsignor Rolando Álvarez, sentenced to 26 years in prison in an illegal and illegitimate trial.”

Between February 9 and 15, the Ortega y Murillo regime declared a total of 317 people, including Bishop Rolando Álvarez, “traitors to the homeland.” Of these, 222 were exiled to the United States and the rest were announced in mid- of the month. Along with the seizure of Nicaraguan citizenship, he also ordered the confiscation of their assets.

Through stipulations in Law 1145, the law that reformed article 21 of the Political Constitution of the Republic of Nicaragua, the presidential couple resolved to strip the Nicaraguan nationality of dissident voices to their regime.

Given this, those declared stateless ask the governments that make up the Human Rights Council “to uphold the demand against the Nicaraguan government for a return to democracy and respect for the human rights of Nicaraguans, so that all expatriates return to rebuild our lives in Nicaragua; all violated civil and political rights are restored and move in peace to a Rule of Law with separation of powers and true and comprehensive democracy, where justice shines for the victims of these crimes.”
