Parquemet will reduce grass to save 300 thousand liters of water in its urban parks

Within the framework of Sustainable Development Plan 2030, the Santiago Metropolitan Park (Parquemet), will replace 50 thousand square meters of ornamental grass with species of low water consumption, saving more than 300,000 liters of water in each irrigation cycle, which is equivalent to more than 37 trucks full of water.

“What we are doing is prioritizing work with other species that may be shrubs or trees and, in specific cases, some programs such as Pump Truck, in no case cement. It is very important that we can conserve permeability in our parks, therefore, this does not mean that we are going to make more hard urban parks, on the contrary, what we are going to do is that there continue to be green, hopefully greener, but a green that be sustainable over time “, said the director of Parquemet, Martin Andrade.

This is the first stage – which is expected to end in February – of the plan that aims to reach 2030 with the entire network of urban parks with efficient use of water.

On the extracted grass, Andrade clarified: “It will be added to the composting areas. All the dry material that we have in the park, all the grass, is taken to a place. In some cases it is mixed with chip and after that it is reintegrated into the ground. So thanks to this work we are going to increase the vegetation layer of this metropolitan park and also in the parks of the urban park network, nothing is lost ”.

In this way, it is working to achieve the goals that are defined for 2030 in matters of sustainability, in the midst of an unprecedented climate crisis.
