Parliaments of Colombia and Venezuela advocate a total opening of the border

The president of the National Assembly elected in 2020, Jorge Rodríguez, reported that several commissions were installed next to the Colombian Senate, including one for the complete opening of the border “in the most peremptory period possible.” Governors, mayors, and councilors from border states will also participate in the commissions, as well as merchants, peasants, and businessmen from those areas. The parliaments of Colombia and Venezuela installed this Friday, October 21, several binational commissions, which involve border actors, to support the governments of both countries in a total opening of the border.

From the Simón Bolívar binational bridge, the president of the National Assembly elected in 2020Jorge Rodríguez, said that from this Friday, October 21, several commissions will be installed – without specifying the number – to address “sensitive issues” such as trade, migratory flow, transportation, security and the complete opening of the border “in the most peremptory period possible”.

He said that, despite the fact that all these issues are the responsibility of the Executive of both countries, “parliament, in its social work, is here so that the voice of the people is heard.” Governors, mayors, and councilors from border states will also participate in the commissions, as well as merchants, peasants, and businessmen from those areas.

While Gloria Flores, president of the International Relations Commission of the Colombian Senate, pointed out that five bi-regional meetings are also planned to address these issues. Dates will be defined at the meeting between the two parliaments.

These five meetings are sectored by region:

  • Colombian Caribbean- Zulia
  • Andean axis – Mérida and Táchira states
  • Department of Arauca – Barinas state
  • Vichada Department – ​​Apure and Amazonas States
  • Guanía Department – ​​Amazonas State

Senator Flores said that with these meetings “we return to the paths of integration.” She stressed that she was accompanied by a bicameral delegation from Colombia “which has a deep commitment to the full reestablishment of relations.”

“The message we are giving is that the voice of the Colombian-Venezuelan border, of its peoples, of its social movements and its unions must be heard (…) These peoples are indissolubly united but the breaking of diplomatic relations affected us painfully. », as well as the closure of consulates, highlighted Colombian politics.
