Parliamentarians are divided between support and criticism of Bolsonaro’s arrest

Fux claims to maintain a number of deputies in the 2026 elections

THE preventive arrest of former president Jair Bolsonarodetermined this Saturday (22) in compliance with the decision of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), caused reactions in the National Congress. Parliamentarians are divided between support and criticism of Bolsonaro’s arrest

Federal deputy Lindbergh Farias (PT-RJ), leader of the PT in the Chamber, considered that the decision was based on the need to guarantee public order.

According to him, even under house arrest, Bolsonaro continued to act politically to tension the environment and put pressure on institutions.

“The vigil called by Flávio Bolsonaro for tonight, which transformed the criminal process into a political act, directly influenced the decision. The mobilization sought to create a climate of intimidation for the STF and the PF, reinforcing the risk of institutional destabilization and interference in the progress of the process, with the holding of a crowd to prevent definitive arrest, including with firearms, in addition to indicating a possible intention to escape, due to violation of the electronic ankle bracelet”, wrote the parliamentarian on social media.

The opposition leader in the Senate, senator Rogério Marinho (PL-RN), considered the arrest an “aberration”.

“Arresting President Jair Bolsonaro, who has already served at home for more than 100 days, is weakened and is not even formally accused is an aberration. The crime is impossible. The injustice is real,” wrote Marinho.

The government leader in the Chamber, deputy José Guimarães (PT-CE) said that the country is experiencing a historic moment.

“The decision was taken based on guaranteeing public order and determines that he remains detained while investigations progress. The country is going through a historic moment. Whoever attacked democracy will pay for it!”

Hamilton Mourão (Republicanos-RS), Bolsonaro’s former vice president and current Senator of the Republic, described the arrest as a persecution.

“President Jair Bolsonaro does not pose a threat to public order and his transfer to the PF clearly shows that there is no end to arbitrary action and persecution.”

Prison

Jair Bolsonaro was arrested this Saturday morning (22). In a statement, the Federal Police reported that it served a preventive arrest warrant in compliance with the decision of the Federal Supreme Court (STF).

This Friday (21) Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL) called, via social media, for a prayer vigil near the house where Bolsonaro is under house arrest since August 4th.

In the decision, minister Alexandre de Moraes says that the meeting could cause turmoil and even facilitate “a possible escape attempt by the defendant.” An attempt was also made to violate the electronic ankle bracelet.

Moraes also orders that a custody hearing be held this Sunday (23), via videoconference, at the Regional Superintendency of the Federal Police in the Federal District, in addition to the provision of full-time medical care to the defendant.
