Paris Olympics: Which Cubans are competing this Tuesday?

MADRID, Spain.- On this eighth day of the Olympic Games in Paris 2024several Cuban athletes will compete both under the Cuban flag and representing other countries. Below are the details.

Cuban Delegation

Women’s canoeing (C2-500 m)

At 5:00 am (Cuban time), the Granma woman Yarisleidis Cyril and Yinnoly López, the youngest athlete in the Cuban delegation at just 17 years old, will compete in the first heat of the qualifying phase of the women’s C2-500 m. This competition will take place at the Nautical Stadium in Vaires-sur-Marne. In the heat, a total of seven boats will try to qualify for the semi-finals, with the first two to cross the finish line obtaining direct passage. The rest will compete later, during the same day, in the quarter-finals to try to secure their place in the semi-finals.

Greco-Roman fight

Greco-Roman wrestling will see action at 5:00 am with Kevin de Armas (60 kg) facing Iranian Mehdi Mohsen in the repechage. De Armas fell in the round of 16 to Japanese Kenichiro Fumitay and had to wait for Fumitay to defeat Zholaman Sharshenbekov (Kyrgyzstan) in the semi-final to secure the repechage, where he hopes to redeem himself to advance towards the bronze medal match.

At the same time, Yosvanys Peña will make his debut in the 77 kg category against Amin Kaviyaninejad of Iran in the round of 16. Gabriel Rosillo, meanwhile, will compete in the round of 16 of the 97 kg category against German Lukas Lazogianis.

The most anticipated moment, not only in Greco-Roman wrestling, but also of the day, will be the fight of Mijaín López (130 kg)), who is seeking his fifth Olympic gold. López will face the Cuban-born Chilean, Yasmani Acosta. Mijaín reaches the title discussion after defeating Azerbaijani Sabah Saleh Shariati in the semifinal with a score of 4-1; he previously beat Seungchan Lee of South Korea and Iranian Amin Mizazadeh.

Wrestling

At 5:35 am, Yusneylis Guzmán will open Cuba’s freestyle wrestling performance. Guzmán, who was already in Tokyo 2021, will make her debut in Paris in the round of 16 of the 50 kg against Turkey’s Evin Demirhan.

Cubans competing for other nations

Volleyball

The day for the Cubans began with the stellar volleyball player Melissa Vargaswho at the time of writing was leading the Turkish team to a victory in the quarter-finals against China.

Athletics

At 6:00 am, Yasmani Copello, representing Turkey, will compete in the 400m repechage. Copello, who finished last in his first-round heat, will look to advance to the semi-finals.

Greco-Roman fight

Yasmani Acosta, representing Chile, will close the day with the aforementioned fight against Mijaín López. The competitions on the tatamis begin at 12:15 pm with the semifinals of the 77 kg, and the fight between López and Acosta will be the twelfth on the B mat.
