Parents say they drive an electric vehicle due to pressure from their children

Children are already driving the revolution of electric vehicleseven though they still can’t get behind the wheel, according to a new global survey.

The survey, carried out by the world leader in electric vehicle charging solutions, ABB E-Mobility, revealed that children not only educate their parents on environmental issues and call them out for their ecologicalbut also contribute to discussions around major purchases at home, such as electric vehicles.

The studymade up of 2,500 parents (with children between 8 and 16 years old) and 2,500 children (between 8 and 16 years old), had participants from the 10 largest ABB E-mobility markets: Germany, Canada, China, United States, France, Norway, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Sweden and Switzerland.

Its main conclusions, published in the World Electric Vehicle Day, they demonstrate the crucial role that the next generation must play in helping to reduce emissions and enable a more sustainable future.

With almost 8 out of 10 parents (79.2%) and three quarters of children (73.6%) who consider that the situation environmental current global climate is bad, the survey revealed a fair amount of intergenerational interaction about the causes of climate change and measures to mitigate it.

In this sense, almost half of the kids has told their parents to be more respectful of the environment, while 58.1% of parents say they have been educated by their children on environmental issues.

68% of children say they are excited about driving an electric vehicle in the future, and 82.6% (rising to 94.6% in China) say they intend to drive an electric vehicle (52 .4%) or hybrid (30.2%) when higher.

Given that 80% of children responded that they believe they have the ability to influence their parents’ purchasing decisions regarding high-value items, such as change in the family car, not surprisingly, 78.6% of parents say they would switch to an electric or hybrid model if they had to buy a new car in the next three years.

In the United States, this influence was more evident, with 33% of parents who drive an electric vehicle saying that it was pressure from their children that made them change.

Globally, the fact that electric and hybrid vehicles are better for the environment and cheaper, ranked as the top two purchase reasons for current EV owners, with 66.1% and 61% respectively.

This figure rises to 93.8% of the parents of Chinawho also state that owning an electric vehicle is a better financial investment, as well as a more sustainable option.

The country, which leads the development, adoption and infrastructure of electric vehicles, demonstrated its greater maturity in the electric market in many of the categories surveyed, with both children and parents reporting increased awareness, discussion and enthusiasm for the benefits of electric mobility.

Other topics covered in the survey revealed both the drive towards e-mobility and the areas where work remains to be done.

Almost 8 out of 10 parents (98% in China) stated that installing an electric vehicle charger – such as ABB’s Terra AC wallbox – would make them more likely to buy a home, demonstrating the importance of facilitating easy and convenient charging.

However, there is still room for improvement, with nearly half of parents (48%) also revealing that their company policies do not support a switch to electric vehicles.

According to the forecasts of the International Energy Agency (IEA)electric vehicles will represent 30% of vehicles sold worldwide in 2030, so charging at home and in the workplace is expected to be essential to meet much of the global demand, in addition to multiplying by nine public chargers to exceed 15 million units at the end of the decade.

Given that the next generation is already excited about the journey towards electrification, and that their fathers more and more, it is vital that older generations in positions of authority catch up and make the bold decisions needed to support change now.

For its part, ABB has committed to converting its entire global fleet of more than 10,000 vehicles to electric vehicles by the end of the decade, as part of its 2030 Sustainability Strategy.

In the last year alone, the number of charging stations installed at ABB facilities increased by almost 100%, from 545 to 1,082.

These are distributed globally in 146 locations in 27 countries. Furthermore, in 2021, EVs or plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) accounted for 44% of global orders for vehicles new from ABB.
