Brazil won its first medals at the Santiago 2025 Parapan American Youth Games on Saturday (01). In table tennis, four Brazilians climbed to the highest place on the podium and won gold, two took silver, and four won bronze. Two finals were between Brazilians.
The competition, for athletes aged 14 to 23, continues until November 9th in two regions of Chile: in metropolitan Santiago and in O’Higgins, south of the capital.
In the dispute from class 2 to 5, Santa Catarina’s Maycon Oliveira beat Arthur Costa, also from Santa Catarina, by 3 sets to 2, with partial scores of 10/12, 11/3, 11/6, 8/11 and 11/3.
In class 9, Lucas Fonseca Segregio scored 3 x 2 against João Pedro Ribeiro Possas (11/9, 4/11, 7/11, 11/8 and 11/8) and took bronze.
Two Brazilian women won gold: in class 7 (walkers), Lethicia Lacerda from Goiás, who beat Venezuelan Maria Victoria Azuaje by 3 sets to 0 (11/4, 11/3 and 11/2); and, in class 8 (walkers), Sophia Kelmer from Rio, who had 3 sets to 2 against Chilean Joseline Yevenes, with splits of 7/11, 11/9, 11/5, 11/13 and 11/6.
Jean Carlos de Souza Mashki, from São Paulo, from class 8, was the last Brazilian to play. Against Costa Rican Steven Roman Chinchilla, he also won by 3 sets to 2, with partials of 7/11, 11/4, 11/8, 7/11 and 11/8. Lucas Fonseca from Minas Gerais won the silver medal, being defeated by Argentine Ethan Skiarsk by 3 sets to 0, with scores of 11/8, 11/7 and 11/4.
Wheelchair tennis
There were three Brazilian participations in wheelchair tennis on the day, with three victories. Vitória Miranda from Minas Gerais beat Peruvian Kate Valentina Valenzuela Rivera by 2 sets to 0, with a double 6/0.
In the singles bracket, Lucas Daniel Dutra from Minas Gerais beat Peruvian Angel Jesus Gonzales Aguilar, by 2 sets to 0 (6/2 and 6/0). Later, he returned to the court alongside Luiz Calixto, also from Minas Gerais, in the doubles, and beat Argentines Ian Davidson and Joaquin Nicolas Lezama, by 2 sets to 0, with scores of 6/1 and 6/0.
Goalball victories
In the second round of the goalball tournament, the women’s team beat Canada 5-3 and maintained a 100% record in the competition – they had already beaten Argentina.
The men’s team also got the better of the Canadians: 8 to 3. This was the team’s first triumph, which drew with the Argentines in its debut.
Basketball defeat
Brazil also took the court against Canada in 5×5 wheelchair basketball. Debuting in the competition, the Brazilians were defeated 76 to 34.
This Sunday, the team takes the court again, this time against Argentina, who were also defeated in their debut – 65 to 62 to Colombia.
