Naybis Morrillo, gold medalist and Paralympic record holder in javelin throw, thanked the support and said that they are “committed to Los Angeles 2028. We dedicate this achievement to all Venezuelans who support us.” President Nicolás Maduro stressed that the Paralympic athletes are “leaders” in each of the disciplines for the new generation “that is being raised in the neighborhoods, in the communities, in the high schools. We must pay a lot of attention and a lot of effort to the popularization of sports.”
On Tuesday night, the 10th, President Nicolás Maduro awarded a group of Paralympic athletes who participated in the Paris 2024 Summer Games with the order “Liberators and Liberators” in its different classes.
Medalists Enderson Santos, Clara Fuentes and Naybis Morillo received the recognition in their first class, while athletes Alejandra Pérez, Lisbeli Vera and Marcos Blanco received the order in their second class.
He also congratulated the athletes who received Olympic diplomas: Franyeli Vargas, Yomaira Cohen, Emma Rodríguez, Alejandra Lérez, Leonel Vera, Linda Pérez, Luis Rodríguez, Belkis Mota, Paola García, Eduard Valera and Danitza Sanabria.
In his speech from Miraflores Palace, Maduro said that it is “wonderful to see the admiration of a people for its athletes,” and said that they will have “the full support of the Venezuelan State for their total development,” including the social aspect, and even hinted at an increase in scholarships for coaches.
He also said that it is important that “training sessions and their cycles are prepared in Venezuela, and if trainers are hired to complement the knowledge of our trainers, let them come.”
He also said that Olympic athletes had some difficulties in winning medals, which “raises the need to increase scientific preparation and well-preparedness, so to speak, scientific planning of the cycle, without overtraining or not training enough.”
They have great challenges from now on, Maduro said. “It is a collective learning experience for the sports movement. You are not only great athletes, great sportsmen individually, you are part of a greater cause called Venezuela.”
He also stressed that they are “leaders” in each of the disciplines for the new generation “that is being created in the neighborhoods, in the communities, in the high schools. We must pay a lot of attention and a lot of effort to the popularization of sports.”
He also announced that the national and para-national games will be held in the states of Anzoátegui, Sucre and Monagas between the months of November and December.
Naybis Morrillo, gold medalist and Paralympic record holder in javelin throw, thanked the president for recognizing the effort. “We are committed to Los Angeles 2028. We dedicate this achievement to all Venezuelans who support us.”
For his part, Arnaldo Sánchez, Minister of Sports, said that the Paralympic athletes not only brought medals and diplomas “but they brought joy (…) we did the same with our traditional athletes.” He indicated that Venezuela was ranked 34th in the table of countries in the Paralympics and number 7 on the continent.
He also thanked the Venezuelan government for its support in preparing the athletes, and said that they are ready to “start the process of territorialization (…) to popularize sport from our communities, from our communal councils.”
