Paraguay advocated this Thursday for an “inclusive and respectful” dialogue that allows “guaranteeing social peace” in Peru, immersed in a series of protests that have left eight people dead so far and have forced the Government to decree a state of emergency for 60 days in seven provinces of the department of Apurímac (south).
“Paraguay is following the situation in Peru with great concern and reiterates its call for inclusive and respectful dialogue between all sectors, considering that it is the best tool to channel citizen demands and guarantee social peace”published the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on its Twitter account.
The Government had already requested, on December 7, a “constructive dialogue” between all actors and political forces in Peru, with the objective of “preserving democracy and its institutions in favor of stability and pacification in that sister country.”
The president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, decreed on Monday the state emergency to appease the demonstrations that are shaking the country and meet the demand of the citizens after the failed coup attempt that led to the removal of former president Pedro Castillo.
The demonstrators demand the freedom of Castillo, the resignation of Boluarte and the immediate call for general elections to define the new president and replace members of Congress.
For his part, Supreme Judge Juan Carlos Checkley ordered yesterday, Wednesday, that Castillo remain in preliminary detention for 48 more hours while a hearing is held to review the request for preventive detention for 18 months that the Prosecutor’s Office presented against the former ruler.
