The government of Paraguay proposed this Saturday to the president Luis Lacalle Pou the exploitation of the deep waters near the port of Nueva Palmira (Colonia) for a pulp company of that country, and the president was “absolutely interested”according to the Paraguayan Minister of Industry and Commerce, Luis Castiglioni.
The Secretary of State said in a statement to the press that Lacalle Pou showed interest in the “opening of a port that will serve for the great Paracel pulp mill project” in Paraguay. The company “intends to use deep waters” near Nueva Palmira to transfer their production to foreign markets.
“Mr. President Lacalle Pou He is absolutely interested in seeing this come to fruition,” Castiglioni said. after the meeting that Mario Abdo Benítez and Lacalle Pou held this Saturday in Asunción. It is a project that “in the short term could be completed,” she added. “We have a great capacity and ability to complement our economies, there is a firm intention to work together to make that happen,” she said.
In another point, the port of Nueva Palmira represents a “strategic importance to receive imports of 500 thousand tons of fertilizers that enter, and 660 thousand tons of grains that go abroad”, according to the Paraguayan foreign minister, Julio Arriola. He said that both countries are “strategic partners” in “several fields,” including investment and infrastructure. He indicated that Uruguay is the 5th investing country in Paraguay.
Lacalle Pou arrived this Friday night in Asunción, the Paraguayan capital, to participate in events for the 211th anniversary of the country’s independence. The president will return to Uruguay this Sunday, after a series of official activities.
