The Vega.– Moments of panic and despair were experienced yesterday in this city with the collapse of a four-story commercial building, where at least six employees were trapped. The collapse of the premises occurred at noon.

According to the versions, 30 people work in the building where the collapse occurred, but at the time of the tragedy there were only six, the rest were on their lunch hour.
After learning what happened, the president Luis Abinader He said that they acted immediately, accompanying the families of the injured people, doing everything possible to preserve the lives of those who were left under the rubble. “We request an investigation to identify responsibilities,” said the president in his Twitter account. The Administrative Minister of the Presidency, José Ignacio Paliza, representing President Abinader and the mayor of Santiago, Abel Martínez, went to the disaster zone, where they regretted what had happened.
Beating said that the government is doing everything possible to rescue the trapped people with their lives.
For his part, Mayor Martínez made the entire team of the mayor’s office available for the operation.
The company R&S Multi Muebles, owner of the building that collapsed, confirmed in a statement that two of its employees were still under the rubble yesterday, but that the authorities have established communication with them.
Although they do not know the causes that caused the collapse of the structure, he said that they are waiting for the intervention of an expert and the competent authorities to carry out the technical survey of the place.
“The collapsed building had more than 30 years of construction and was acquired by our company in 2008, it was in the process of changing the exterior glass on the first level,” explained R&S Multi Muebles.
The company assured that it will give a final report after the evaluation of the damages by the technical body and the corresponding authorities. After regretting what happened, he thanked all citizens for their support in the rescue efforts.
Several units from the Santo Domingo and Santiago Fire Department and Civil Defense led the rescue efforts, supported by canine units.
The rescue operation is led by General Juan Manuel Méndez, director of the Emergency Operations Center (COE), together with the general of the La Vega Fire Department, César Abreu, the chief of the Fire Department, Colonel Alexis Moscat, the mayor of the head municipality Kelvin Cruz and the provincial governor Luisa Altagracia Jiménez.
