Panamanian Olmedo Núñez Peñalba was released this January 23, after seven months imprisoned in Venezuela for a case of alleged espionage. He is already in his country with his family.
The Penal Forum organization confirmed the release through a social media post where he recalled that Núñez was arbitrarily detained on June 19, 2025.
The president of Panama, José Raúl Mulino, expressed his satisfaction with the release of Núñez. «Welcome to your homeland. Go ahead,” he wrote.

Núñez Peñalba was arrested when he was on a Panamanian-flagged vessel that was intercepted by the National Armed Forces in the exclusive economic zone of Venezuela.
Venezuelan authorities accused the ship’s crew of an alleged case of espionage. According to the Panamanian Foreign Ministry, Núñez was in charge of engine maintenance on the ship.
The crew consisted of nine people: two Dutch, including the captain, three Hondurans, one Spanish, one Indonesian, one Panamanian and one Hungarian.
Until January 22, the organization Foro Penal had confirmed the release of 154 political prisoners in the country, within the framework of the announcement made by the president of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, who assured that they would release a “significant number” of detainees for political causes.
