Panama seeks to become an agri-food distribution center for Asia

The President of the Republic, Laurentino Cortizo, held a meeting this Saturday with the Director General of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Qu Dongyu.

According to Cortizo, who described the meeting as “very productive”, this meeting focused on finding mechanisms to establish an agri-food hub in Panama to distribute food to Asia.

Cortizo stressed that by October he will present to the FAO the proposal to establish this regional center for the distribution of agri-food products in the country.

This proposal will be prepared by the Panamanian Government and a team from the FAO, as agreed at this meeting.

“This first step will strengthen Panama’s leadership as a center for logistics, innovation, technology and training for the exports of the countries of the region, develop commercial and technological strategies, and ensure greater competitive advantages,” said the president, assuring that it is necessary to have a well-prepared document and in this way you strengthen the Panamanian productive sector and contribute to the generation of jobs.

The director general of FAO assured that Panama “can become the new distribution center for food, technology and medicines for the world, especially for Asia”
