Panama receives an honorable mention from international organizations thanks to the Gender Parity Initiative

International organizations awarded a “Special Mention” to the Ministry of Social Development (MIDES), for the experience “Initiative of Gender Parity”, highlighted by the promotion within the framework of a public-private alliance aimed at increasing the labor participation of women, reducing the gender wage gap and promoting the participation of women in leadership positions.

The recognition was given within the framework of the Summit of the Americas with the Inter-American Award Ceremony for Best Practices for Women’s Leadership, which recognizes, highlights and amplifies both public policies and initiatives from the public, private and society sectors. that promote an increase in the number of women in leadership positions and seek to strengthen their empowerment and ability to influence decision-making.

The Minister, María Inés Castillo, was notified of the recognition through a letter issued by the Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM) informing her that the Advisory Committee of the First Edition of the Regional Convocation agreed to recognize a Special Mention to MIDES of Panama, in the category “Public policies and guarantees for the exercise of leadership by women”, for the experience “Gender Parity Initiative”.

The Gender Parity Initiative in Panama (IPG Panama) constitutes a public-private alliance aimed at promoting good practices to close gender economic gaps. It is led by the Ministry of Social Development.

Public institutions and private sector organizations participate in its leadership group. In addition, it has an active nucleus of Strategic Allies, from multilateral organizations and public and private organizations. In 2021, 57 companies and organizations joined the IPG Panama, impacting 17,370 women and 892 organizations, and the governance and actions of the Initiative have been strengthened to put women at the center of post-Covid economic recovery.

Its strategy is centered around three objectives: to increase the labor participation of women; make visible and reduce gender wage gaps and promote the participation of women in leadership positions.

The International Organizations that awarded the prize are: the Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM), the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) of the Organization of American States (OAS), the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the General Secretariat Iberoamericana (SEGIB), ParlAmericas, International IDEA together with two civil society organizations: Caribbean Women in Leadership (CIWiL), Latin American and Caribbean Committee for the Defense of Women’s Rights (CLADEM), with the collaboration of the Summits of the Americas Secretariat, of the Department for Effective Public Management (DGPE) of the OAS, with the support of the Government of Canada.
