Panama confirms 21 cases of monkeypox, all those infected are men

A total of 21 cases of monkeypox have been confirmed in the country by the Ministry of Health (MINSA) through the Department of Epidemiology. The authorities explained that the cases are registered between the ages of 25 to 59 years.

According to the epidemiology report issued by the Gorgas Commemorative Institute for Health Studies, the 21 cases have occurred in men who have sex with men, of which 16 cases have been managed on an outpatient basis and 5 have had to be hospitalized.

The head of Epidemiology of the Minsa, Lourdes Moreno, explained that to date 78 people suspected of monkeypox have been investigated and the places where the cases have been detected are: the Panama Metro Health Region, the West Panama Region and San Miguelito.

He broke down that in Panama Metro the areas with the highest incidence are: Bella Vista, Betania, El Chorrillo, Parque Lefevre, Río Abajo, Santa Ana, San Francisco and Pacora; in West Panama the areas are: Juan Demóstenes Arosemena, Playa Leona and Guadalupe and in San Miguelito in Belisario Frías.
