Panama celebrates the bicentennial of its independence from Spain

Through protocol acts and still under biosecurity measures due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Panama celebrated on November 28 the bicentennial of its independence from Spain, 200 years full of history.

The activities were led by the President of the Republic Laurentino Cortizo, who earlier today carried out the symbolic raising of the flag at the Presidency of the Republic in the Old Town.

“On November 28, 1821, in an open town hall the Independence of Panama was proclaimed, declaring us free from the colonial ties that united us to Spain,” said the head of state.

Then, the president, along with his wife, the first lady Yazmín Colón de Cortizo, vice president Gabriel carrizo and other members of the Government Cabinet, participated in the traditional Te Deum, in commemoration of the 200 years of the Independence of Panama from Spain , chaired by Monsignor José Domingo and the Interreligious Committee in the Cathedral of Panama

Later, Juan Carlos Monterrey Gómez, who served as Panama’s lead negotiator at the COP26 climate change conference; was appointed by the president, to read the act of independence of that event originated in 1821.

The celebration extended to the district of San Miguelito, where municipal authorities led the protocol acts.

In West Panama, the important date was commemorated with a small parade starring musical bands.

Meanwhile, at the Rommel Fernández Stadium, hundreds of families came to see the presentation of bands, which paid honor to the country. Long live Panama!
