Panama calls on the international community to impose more sanctions and isolation against Venezuela

Mulino will take the Darien crisis to the UN General Assembly

Panamanian President José Mulino offered his support to opposition leader María Corina Machado in the fight against “the Venezuelan dictatorship”

Panamanian President José Mulino asked the international community on Friday, September 20, to impose more sanctions and isolation against Venezuela. During an interview with DW In Spanish, the president indicated that Colombia and Brazil are heading in the right direction in relation to their neighboring country, but emphasized that Nicolás Maduro’s political will is not compatible with the internal political reality.

Regarding the asylum of Edmundo González, presidential candidate for the Unitary Platform, the Panamanian said he did not understand his circumstances, but considered that his departure from the country is a factor that marks a before and after.

“I am a bit skeptical of the government in exile, I don’t know of any in recent history that has prospered, and Venezuela has already gone through a more or less similar situation with Juan Guaidó, although Mr. Edmundo has all the legitimacy in the world, but it is very difficult to maneuver from abroad,” stressed José Raúl Mulino.

The president offered his support to opposition leader María Corina Machado in the fight against “the Venezuelan dictatorship.”

The Panamanian president also expressed concern about the possibility that the flow of Venezuelan migrants will increase with Maduro remaining in power, especially through the dangerous Darien jungle, where the majority of the migrants are Venezuelan citizens fleeing the humanitarian, political and economic crisis facing the nation.

However, Mulino reiterated that his country will not give up on its efforts to achieve the definitive closure of the border it shares with Colombia, which thousands of migrants cross daily in the hope of reaching the United States in search of better opportunities in life.
