Panama and PAHO strengthen ties in the fight against malaria, Covid-19 and other Public Health issues

The Minister of Health, Luis Francisco Sucre, representing the National Government, participated in the launch of the postal issue commemorating the 120th anniversary of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).

In this act that took place in the Padre Guardia Jaén Room of the Bolívar Palace of the Foreign Ministry, the head of Health highlighted that “within the implementation of actions that have been collaborating with PAHO, there is the Hearts program that has to do with care for the prevention and early care of arterial hypertension, cardiovascular problems and heart problems”.

Sucre added that “we have received recognition from the director of PAHO, Dr. Jarbas Barbosa da Silva, as representatives of the Government of Panama, for the implementation and the work that has been carried out by the Health system to reduce diseases cardiovascular”.

For his part, the director of PAHO, Jarbas Barbosa Da Silva, highlighted the cooperation work that the country is coming to strengthen and the effective response that the country carried out to combat and control the pandemic.

“The objective is to review the cooperation that we have with the Ministry of Health, the Gorgas Memorial Institute and the CSS and other institutions, since Panama is an important member state of PAHO and we have cooperation issues here with the strengthening of the response that they gave during the pandemic, to public health emergencies and non-communicable diseases,” he said.

He congratulated the country, for the control against tobacco and the care of cardiovascular diseases in the population.

Meanwhile, Ana Rivieré Cinnamond, representative in Panama of the international organization, explained about the technical cooperation that is being given to Minsa, the Social Security Fund (CSS) and the Gorgas Memorial Institute, in different aspects that are focused on various aspects, from infectious diseases and improvements at the level of the genomic laboratory and the control of non-communicable diseases, as mentioned in the event, the award ceremony of the Hearts program.

He said that “we work on other issues such as emergencies and improvements to the structures and essential functions of the health systems.”

The event was also attended by Yill del Carmen Otero, Vice Minister of Multilateral Affairs and International Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Enrique Lau Cortés, director of the Social Security Fund and Vladimir Berrío-Lemm, head of the philatelic service representing the General Director of Posts Panama, Julio Ramírez Reina and several representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited in the country.
