The Ombudsman’s Office of Panama detailed this Monday that it exchanged experiences on migratory dynamics made up of migrants and refugees who transit through the Darién Gap, during a three-day journey with their counterparts from Colombia.
Jonathan Santana, director of International Relations of the Panamanian Ombudsman’s Office, toured the Acandí-Chocó area with human rights delegates to demonstrate the situation of the migrant population and those in a position to request refuge in transit.
He explained that several border sites were visited after the meeting that took place in Apartadó, a place from where the verification of the current situation in the migratory corridors was carried out.
Also, meetings were held with local authorities and communities in the region; In addition, the Catamaranes dock was visited, in order to demonstrate the situation of the migrant population and those susceptible to refuge.
The UN Refugee Agency- UNHCR also participated in the meeting and a report was presented on the Migrant and Refugee Population in the municipality of Necoclí, one of the eleven municipalities that are part of the Urabá subregion, located in the department of Antioquia and place from where the immigrants leave in groups towards Panama.
