PAN expels Yunes for supporting judicial reform

The expulsion occurred hours after Claudia Sheinbaum, president-elect of Mexico, assured that Yunes Márquez made a good decision and history will recognize it.

Before the vote, PAN leader Marko Cortés threatened Yunes Márquez with removing him from the party if he voted for the ruling party.

Yunes, however, cast his vote in favor of the reform proposed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who said today that he did not reach any agreement with the PAN member or his family.

The vote of Yunes Marquez

“I will vote in favor of the ruling to create a new model for the administration of justice,” Yunes Márquez said last night at the podium of the Old Senate Headquarters. He assured that the proposal could be improved in the secondary laws.

The Morena supporters and their allies applauded Yunes. They cheered him on with smiles. “The reform is going ahead, the reform is going ahead!” they chanted.

Before confirming his vote, Yunes assured that he is not a traitor, as his fellow party members have called him. He also said that the fate of the country is not only in his hands, but in the hands of millions of Mexicans.

“Does the majority have the right to make a structural change to a branch of the Union? The majority has the right to promote structural changes. This has been the case throughout history. Probably the greatest concern that the reform provokes is the popular vote. But, who appoints the ministers today? It is the Senate, at the proposal of the president, who has a party origin and affiliation,” Yunes Márquez explained.

”I am neither a coward nor a traitor. I left the hospital to give the reasons for my vote. I have been the object of a public lynching, wanting to make me responsible for the destiny of Mexico. I am hurt by the aggression that has originated in my party. Since I was young I have fought for democracy from the PAN, I was formed in that party. I cannot accept that they want to impose on me the meaning of my vote,” he added.

Yunes said he was not subjected to any pressure from the federal government, but called for agreements to be reached between political forces.

”Nothing justifies confrontation and polarization. A new government is about to begin. I want to leave behind the lack of dialogue between the government and the political forces,” he said.
