Romero explained that there will be more appointments of representatives in other parts of the world, as part of the relaunch process that the PAN announced a few weeks ago.
According to the PAN leader, the position of Cabeza de Vaca is a recognition of a brave governor “who defended federalist freedom and faced the confrontation of the regime.”
This is because during his term, which ended in 2023, García Cabeza de Vaca faced an attempt to violate his immunity in order to be criminally prosecuted.
The formal accusation in the Chamber of Deputies was presented for alleged operations with resources of illicit origin, but no evidence of this was presented so the plenary session did not rule on it; Even so, Morena’s majority in the House approved the trial for alleged tax fraud.
However, the state Congress, which was heard, did not declare the violation, since it had a PAN majority. It even processed two constitutional controversies before the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN), which almost a year later confirmed the decision, although in the meantime the correlation of forces in the state changed to give a majority to Morena.
The president was able to finish his term but has lived in the United States since then.
The PAN announcement highlighted Cabeza de Vaca’s career, his knowledge of the bilateral relationship with the United States and experience in working on border issues, according to Mariana Gómez del Campo, Secretary of International Affairs of the PAN leadership.
He announced that the PAN will soon have representations in South America, Central America, Europe and Asia.
In his message, García Cabeza de Vaca thanked him for his appointment and pointed out that the challenge will be to position the PAN among Mexican communities abroad, especially in the United States, where nearly 40 million people of Mexican origin reside.
Morena deputies denounce him
The designation coincided with the complaint filed by deputies of the state Congress and federal legislators against the former president, a complaint that they supported with signatures from citizens of that entity.
In Mexico City, Armando Prieto Herrera, local deputy of Reynosa, the president of Morena in Tamaulipas, Guadalupe Gómez, and the vice president of the board of directors of the federal Chamber of Deputies, Sergio Gutiérrez Luna, filed a new complaint with the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime (FEMDO) for alleged extortion and crimes related to hydrocarbons.
They accused that Cabeza de Vaca allowed during his mandate a “mini Tamaulipas Tax Administration Service”, which allegedly set up checkpoints – coordinated and operated by Cabeza de Vaca’s armed police wing – where transporters were extorted and powers that did not correspond to them were taken.
“They confiscated all the material that entered Mexico, that’s what customs were for,” according to Prieto Herrera.
“They let the ferrotanks with alleged huachicol pass. At the time they made a lot of noise because they had confiscated more or less 200,000 liters of huachicol on a single occasion, after that they did not confiscate any ferrotanks again. Even, a few months ago, the current local deputy Ismael García, brother of the former governor, said that hundreds of ferrotanks with huachicol had been circulating on the Tamaulipas highway for many years. Why not them? “That’s why we come to have the FGR open the investigations.”
Gutiérrez Luna said that, although the former president had dual nationality and that would prevent him from being extradited, he renounced his American nationality to be able to occupy the governorship.
“If he didn’t do it, he committed fraud here in Mexico. We have said for a long time that he had arrived illegally at those positions and presented papers, which are in the INE, where he says he has renounced that nationality. We know that he is hiding between MC Allen and Houston, because he uploads photos of people from the same party who have gone to see him and who are accessories. What we demand from the Prosecutor’s Office is that extradition be requested,” he added.
