Palmeiras puts pressure on Botafogo

Palmeiras won this Sunday by 0-2 in their visit to Athletico Paranaense and, in addition to distancing itself from Flamengowith whom they shared third place in the Brazilian Championship standings, remained on the lookout for leader Botafogo, who are three points behind. The green team from Sao Paulo, led by Portuguese Abel Ferreira, took advantage of Flamengo’s slip-up, which this Sunday fell 2-1 on its visit to Corinthians in another of the matches for the twenty-fifth round.

Botafogo, who beat Fortaleza 2-0 on Saturday in the duel between the leaders, regained first place in the standings, where they have 50 points, two more than the Ceará team, which fell to second place, with 48.

In Curitiba, Palmeiras, the 2023 tournament champion, beat Athletico Paranaense, who did not take advantage of their home advantage and let themselves take the lead from the start of the match. With goals from the ‘jewel’ Estevão in the first half and Mauricio in the second, Ferreira’s team continues its good run in the League and with the status of one of the favorites for the title.

In Sao Paulo, Flamengo, who needed to win to stay ahead of Botafogo, failed to prevail on Sunday in their visit to Corinthians, who won 2-1 at the Neo Química Arena stadium with goals from Talles Magno and Paraguayan Ángel Romero, who secured the victory for the Paulistas in the second half.

A match full of fouls

Having struggled from the start after the early exit of Spaniard Héctor Hernández due to injury, the Argentinean Ramón Díaz’s men were encouraged on the pitch by the fans in a match that turned out to be average and in which Flamengo played better offensively in the first half. The match, riddled with fouls, ended with three expulsions, including Flamengo’s Argentinean debutant Carlos Alcaraz, who was involved in a confusion with Corinthian Cacá after Yuri Alberto was sent off, almost at the end of the match.

In another of Sunday’s matches, Gremio went from the joy of feeling like a winner upon returning to its stadium, where it had not played for two months due to the rains that hit Porto Alegre, to the sadness of defeat in the final five minutes.

Atlético Mineiro stopped their onslaught by winning 2-3 with a comeback achieved in the minutes of stoppage time by Colombian Brahian Palacios, who tied the match, and Chilean Eduardo Vargas, who took the lead with a header.

Until the 90th minute, the host Gremio – with one less player since the first half after Gustavo Martins was sent off – was the winner with two goals scored by the Dane Martin Braithwaite and the Argentine Franco Cristaldo, compared to the penalty scored by Gustavo Scarpa for Mineiro. The victory left Atlético Mineiro in ninth position, while Gremio fell to fifteenth.
