Palmeiras beats Santos and takes 1st place in Group C of Paulistão

Palmeiras got the better of the classic against Santos, winning 1-0 at Allianz Parque, in the 11th and last and penultimate round of the qualifying phase of the Campeonato Paulista. With tonight’s triumph, Alviverde – already classified in the quarterfinals of Paulistão – took off even more in the leadership of Group C, with 26 points, nine ahead of Mirassol (17). Peixe, commanded by Fabián Bustos, will depend on the last round to try to qualify. Peixe occupies the third position in Group D, with 10 points, just two points behind runner-up Santo André (12). In first of the group is Bragantino, with 19.

In front of an audience of more than 38 thousand people at Allianz Parque, Verdão pressured Peixe from the first minutes. Santos resisted as best they could, with good marking in midfield. Even with more control of the ball, and insisting on plays on the sides of the field, João Paulo’s goal was little threatened. In the 23rd minute, the first real chance to score came from Peixe, with Ricardo Goulart who tested a poisonous ball to the ground that stopped the goalkeeper Weverton. Verdão responded in the attack, but João Paulo closed the goal twice: in a header by Gustavo Gómez and a kick by Rafael.

In stoppage time, after a rebound from a kick by midfielder Alviverde Zé Rafael, defender Velázquez took a penalty, after hitting Kuscevic’s chest inside the area, and as he had already received a yellow card minutes before – for kicking Rony in the head – the defender ended up expelled. The midfielder Raphael Veiga charged with precision in the right corner, without chances for the goalkeeper João Paulo, and put Verdão in front of the score.

On the return of the interval, Verdão wasted a shower of goals. In the first five minutes: first Dudu hit a cross and then Rony deflected it to the goal, but missed. Then it was the left side Jorge, in a beautiful individual move on the left. He got rid of three markers, but did not beat goalkeeper João Paulo, who saved Santos once again. Palmeiras continued to dominate the match, but made a mistake in the shots. In the final minutes, Peixe almost equalized with a kick from Gabriel Pirani, but this time it was goalkeeper Weverton who shone.
