Moisés Gutiérrez, lawyer for the Coalition for Human Rights and Democracy, went this Monday, October 28, to the Palace of Justice to introduce a Habeas Corpus in favor of journalist Nelin Escalante, who was taken away by officials from the General Directorate of Military Counterintelligence ( Dgcim) of the Líder Shopping Center in the afternoon.
However, Gutiérrez reported that after waiting for more than eight hours at the Palace of Justice, he was notified that “they had instructions not to receive the Habeas Corpus.”
The lawyer explained that they presume that Nelin Escalante is imprisoned at the main headquarters of the Dgcim, but “we cannot affirm this, since the defense body nor the family have been able to have access to him.”
Moisés Gutiérrez recalled that this situation is “a flagrant violation of the right to defense, the right of any citizen to access a natural judge and due process.”
