Authorities are investigating the death of a two-year-old indigenous girl from the Embera Katío community, who was under the protection of the Colombian Institute for Family Welfare, ICBF, in Medellín.
This minor, who suffered from a congenital heart defect and had presented health complications on repeated occasions, died at the San Vicente Fundación Hospital.
The girl, who was in a foster home under the protection measure of the ICBF, was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) due to her delicate state of health.
Despite medical efforts, the minor died, prompting the health center to notify authorities on the morning of Tuesday, August 13.
Sijin carried out the technical inspection of the body, while the Forensic Medicine Service will determine the exact cause of death.
The ICBF, through its Director of Protection, Diana Carolina Baloy, expressed its regret for the death of the minor and reported that the entity had guaranteed the accompaniment of the family members in all medical procedures, providing financial support for their travel from southwestern Antioquia to the capital.
“Her family members were present in all the actions carried out by the psychosocial team of the Family Welfare and the hospital,” Baloy said in an official statement. The ICBF also announced that it will continue to provide specialized psychosocial support to the girl’s family during this difficult time.
