But in Mexico coverage decreased. In 2024, only 79.8% of children had the first dose of any of the measles vaccines. The second dose had coverage of only 69%.
This was decisive for the measles outbreak to spread in Mexico, where it arrived with cases imported from other countries. The risk of infections starting in the country was also high because it shared a border with the United States. There, especially in Texas, transmission began at the end of January, weeks before in Mexico.
So, despite the efforts of the Ministry of Health, which implemented rapid action responses and administered thousands of vaccines since last year, the outbreak continues.
The agency estimates that only 5% of infections are active, a much lower proportion than that reported at the highest peak of the outbreak. However, authorities fell short of their goal of completely eliminating the outbreak by last November.
