The Chilean Football Federation filed a complaint with FIFA against its counterpart in Ecuador for the “use of a false birth certificate, false declaration of age and false nationality” of the player Byron Castillo, who would have been born in Colombia.
But the Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) rejected the complaint and assured that Castillo is “duly registered with the competent legal authority” and has “all the national documentation in order,” it said in a statement.
If FIFA accepts Chile’s complaint, Ecuador could lose the points from the games in which Castillo played in the South American qualifier, in which he won the last direct place in the region for the World Cup in Qatar, and his place would pass into the hands of Chili.

“FIFA has decided to open disciplinary proceedings in relation to the possible breach of the call criteria for the indicated matches. In this context, the FEF and the Peruvian Football Federation have been invited to present their positions before the FIFA Disciplinary Committee. The winger who currently plays for Barcelona de Guayaquil defended in eight games of the tie against Ecuador, in which he won 14 points.
Castillo played for Ecuador in the draws against Argentina (1-1) and Chile (0-0), in the victories against Venezuela (1-0), Chile (2-0), Bolivia (3-0) and Paraguay ( 2-0) and in the defeats against Albirroja (3-1) and Uruguay (1-0).
In the event that the points achieved in these matches were lost, Ecuador, which finished the qualifier in fourth place with 26 points, would fall to the last step with 12 units.
Chile, for its part, would be the main beneficiary since it would add five points and climb to fourth place with 24 units, the same as Peru but with a better balance of goals, which would allow it to qualify directly for Qatar-2022.
