President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo created the Presidential Commission for Electoral Reform, which will be led by Pablo Gómez Álvarez, who left her position as head of the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), under the Ministry of Finance, the Federal Government reported yesterday
This new body will have as its main mission thoroughly review the electoral and party system in the country, as well as design a legislative reform according to current times, focused on democracy and the participation of the people, according to an informative card.
The Federal Government explained that the commission will work in two stages. First, it will make an integral diagnosis about the State that keeps the Mexican electoral model, including the functioning of political parties, popular representation and citizen participation mechanisms. Then, he will prepare a legislative reform proposal that is consistent with the current times in Mexico, where democracy and the people are put in the center
.
In the next few days, Sheinbaum Pardo will announce the complete list of members of the Commission, which will work in a coordinated manner with legislators, specialists, academics, civil society organizations and citizenship.
Among its responsibilities, it is also contemplated to analyze new representation figures and tools to expand the direct intervention of Mexicans in public life.
Gómez Álvarez, who will assume the presidency of the Commission, has a degree in Economics from UNAM and has a broad political and academic career, the government said. He was four federal deputy and Senator of the Republic. In addition, he is the author and co -author of various books, lecturer and articulist in national media.
The Government recalled that Gomez has been the architect of previous political-electoral reforms, with the aim of consolidating a more solid, representative and close democratic system to citizens.
