Workers on their own spend more time on professional activity than employees and bosses. While the average hours worked weekly in the country is 39.1, who acts on their own spends 45.3 hours in the craft.
The data refer to the fourth quarter of 2024 and are part of the National Continuous Household Sample Survey (PNAD), released on Friday (14) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
IBGE classify As a worker on his own “the person who works exploring his own venture, alone or with a partner, without having employed and counting, or not, with the help of an unpaid worker of a member of the home unit in which he resides”.
The survey points out that employees are the second category that spends the most hours in activities, 39.6 per week. Then there are employers with 37.5 hours. The group identified by IBGE as an auxiliary family worker appears next 28 hours per week.
The auxiliary family worker is the person who helps the economic activity of a relative, for example, in the family garden, but without any compensation. “More sporadic, seasonal and, in fact, without a work weekend within what we will normally see in other activities such as commerce, industry or services,” explains PNAD coordinator Adriana Beringy.
According to IBGE, the population occupied in the last quarter of 2024 was 103.8 million people.
In this universe, employees were 69.5%, which includes domestic employees. Their own workers accounted for 25.1%; while employers, 4.2%. Auxiliary family workers accounted for only 1.3% of the occupied population.
Work harder, earns less
Although they spend more hours working, the professional on their own is the type of occupation that receives the lowest performance.
While the average monthly income of the Brazilian was R $ 3,215 in the last quarter of 2024, the worker’s gain on his own was R $ 2,682. The employee had a salary of R $ 3,105. The top of the list was with the employer, $ 8,240.
More hours worked
The workers on their own in São Paulo are the ones that spend the most time in activities, an average of 46.9 hours per week. Then there are those of Rio Grande do Sul (46.5) and those from Ceará (46,2).
Among the employees, again those from Sao Paulo lead the weekly working hours ranking (40.7). Then appear those from Santa Catarina (40.6) and Mato Grosso (40.5).
Among employers, the largest weekly workloads are from Santa Catarina, with 40.4 hours, and Rio Grande do Sul, with 40.2 hours. Sao Paulo is the sixth, with 38.7 hours per week.
In the case of auxiliary family worker, those from Santa Catarina spend an average of 41.6 hours per week in activities, 48% higher than the country’s average.
Employment in the country
IBGE research investigates behavior in the labor market for people 14 years or older and takes into account all forms of occupation, whether or without a signed, temporary and own portfolio, for example. 211,000 households are visited in all states and the Federal District.
