OVV: Women justify violence more in matters of self-defense and "honor"

Although 89% of those surveyed by the Venezuelan Violence Observatory (OVV) said they disagreed that someone should be seriously hurt if they have been unfaithful to their partner, 7% said they agreed that a woman can hit another if she is involved in infidelity with her partner. The investigation determined that among women, violent behavior in cases of infidelity is more approved.

Venezuelans do not approve of violence in general, although in matters of personal defense and “honor” women tend to justify it, whether it is carried out by themselves or by a third party, a symptom of the survival of the macho culture in the country, according to emerges from the latest investigation of the Venezuelan Violence Observatory (OVV), presented virtually this Thursday, November 17.

The research, called “Women Victims and Victims,” was implemented to find out how the population interprets violence between men and women, between couples or within the family, explained Roberto Briceño León, sociologist and director of the OVV. It was done through a survey of 1,200 households throughout the country and the implementation of focus groups in 15 states.

One of the questions asked by the Observatory researchers is whether it was agreed that a man should slap a woman. 88% expressed their disagreement. While 83% said they disagreed that it is a woman who hits a man. “The rejection is collective, but men double in the justification of physical violence against women,” said Briceño León.

Although 89% of those surveyed said they disagreed that someone should be seriously hurt if they have been unfaithful to their partner, 7% said they agreed that a woman can hit another if she is involved in unfaithfulness with her partner.

The investigation determined that among women, violent behavior in cases of infidelity is more approved. Venezuelan women also justify violence if a man does not respond violently (with insults and blows) in a situation of “lack of respect.” In the researcher’s opinion, this demonstrates the persistence of a macho culture among this sector of the population.

But both genders expressed equality when justifying the murder of another person if they have committed rape against a daughter (30%). This type of approval is the highest among all types of violence, assured the director of the Observatory.

He considers that this justification of the crime (homicide) comes from the belief of the population in punishing rape in an “exemplary manner”, especially against children and adolescents. From January to October this year, the Public Ministry (MP) recorded 1,024 cases of sexual abuse against this sector of the population, for which reason the institution develops an educational campaign called “Pedophilia is a crime”, with which they hope to reduce the prevalence of this crime.

Regarding the perception of violence in the streets, 34% consider that it has increased. 14% of those surveyed said that they or a family member had been the victim of a crime in the last 12 months, but only 44% reported it to the authorities.

Those people who were victims of thefts, robberies or any other type of violence limited the hours of entertainment or places of recreation, as well as the places where they go shopping. Only 20% said they felt the need to move home, but Briceño León said that “it is not a small thing.”
