He Venezuelan Observatory of Prisons (OVP) denounced on June 14 that 91 prisoners in a police cell of the Scientific, Criminal and Criminal Investigations Corps (Cicpc) from Lara state they went on hunger strike because of the authorities’ refusal to transfer them to court and because of the conditions in which they “survive”.
Through a press release, the organization explained that the inmates refused to receive food brought to them by their relatives in protest against the lack of drinking water, the “inhumane conditions they survive” and the refusal to transfer them to court. .
According to the OVP, the relatives explained that in Lara there are “serious” problems with the water supply, for which reason “for months” the officials and relatives themselves must pay for tanker trucks, the cost of which is between 35 and 40 Dollars.
The OVP added that last weekend, the tanker trucks could not reach the Cicpc headquarters due to “a shortage of gasoline.”

The organization also stated that many of the prisoners who are in that police headquarters have transfer orders to prisons, but these are not executed “because the Ministry of Penitentiary Services does not assign them places.”
The number of prisoners killed so far in 2023 rises to eight
A man who was incarcerated in the Fénix Penitentiary Community became the eighth prisoner who died in Lara state so far in 2023. Bracho Paz was a native of Zulia state and was sentenced by the fifth court of that region for the crime of aggravated and continuous sexual abuse. He had to pay 16 years in jail and had already spent 10 years in prison.
Two and a half days passed in the hospital and Bracho Paz’s care was complicated because he was alone and without family members and on May 15 at 9:40 p.m. he suffered sudden respiratory arrest.
The next day, relatives arrived in Barquisimeto and confessed to the Lara media that they had requested a humanitarian measure to treat Bracho Paz’s cancer in his home and under his care, but it was never granted.
Throughout the state, seven male prisoners and one female have died during this 2023. Bracho Paz would be the third registered in Fénix after Inés Antonio Pérez and Jesús María Alvarracín Camargo who also died in April from illnesses.
