The Maternity Percy Boland of the capital Santa Cruz is in an emergency. This was stated this Tuesday, February 7, by the health professionals of the institution, who denounce that they are overloaded with patients. They affirm that the picture is so alarming, that more than 20 babies are hospitalized in a transitional space suitable for a maximum of six newborns.
“We are in a neonatal emergency at our institution; we are full, as we have always been every year; The neonatology beds are saturated and this has already gone from brown to dark because we no longer have a solution, ”said Mario Herbas, the hospital’s medical director.
The professional emphasized that they do not have sufficient capacity to receive more newborns, for which they ask the Ministry of Health and the Santa Cruz Governorate deliver more items to enable more beds and equipment and thus alleviate the high demand.
“We have to operate yes or yes, we cannot reject patientsthat is illegal, but we cannot give poor care to newborns either”, added Herbas.
Along the same lines, Erwin Román, head of neonatology at the maternity ward, detailed the terrible panorama that exists in the hospital. He explained that the newborn room accommodates six babies, but given the lack of space they accommodate up to 21 premature neonates.
It is a transit area, where newborns must receive first aid before being referred to the neonatology rooms. However, due to lack of space, they even occupy the armchairs to care for patients.
The doctor suggested that an agreement should be made with private clinics to expand this service and avoid this situation that is occurring in the women’s hospital and even build a new maternity in the city.
