Overflowing riverbeds and undone streets, the story that repeats itself every winter in Masaya

With the arrival of the winter season of each year, the Mayor’s Office of Masaya approves multiple humanitarian assistance plans and million-dollar projects for the maintenance of channels and roads considered highly vulnerable, however, there is a story that always repeats itself: overflowing riverbeds and flooded streets that become impassable.

In more than 10 consecutive years of the government of the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) in Masaya, the storm drainage situation continues to worry citizens who clamor for a solution to this problem that is repeated year after year with the arrival of the season. winter, when governments reactivate civil defense to assist the victims.

Under anonymity, a councilor from this municipality stated that the commune is prepared with riverbed cleaning projects and repair of short stretches of roadswhich are executed to improve traffic in the event of catastrophic events caused by rain that could cause collapses in the city, as happens every year.

Some projects that the councilman framed are the cleaning of the riverbed next to the Municipal Market, Ernesto Fernández, and street repairs in the Santa Rosa and El Calvario neighborhoods.

However, a former opposition official from this department assured that the execution of these projects, are not enough to solve the problemand recognizes that the approval of millions of córdobas for these are not supervised by the Council, generating doubts among the population if they are actually carried out or not.

“Since municipal autonomy was lost and everything was politicized, pro-government councilors have no authority to speak. Neither liberals nor Sandinistas have been interested in finding a solution to this eternal problem; What the mayors do is make cosmetic repairs and in the reports they invoice a huge amount of money spent, but the problem remains the same, “he said.

For his part, the Masaya councilor assured that there is an Infrastructure and Transportation Commission that is in charge of supervising the construction and maintenance projects of the Winter Plan each year. “She is in charge of monitoring the works, but the problem of garbage has always been pointed out,” he said.

Commune blames the population for the garbage

The public employee indicated that the problem of every year with the rain, It is a consequence of the garbage and the culture of poor hygiene of the citizens. Describes that when roads or channels collapse it is due to the amount of tons of garbage, plastics, and other inorganic materials that are irresponsibly discarded on the streets.

«Let me tell you that the same merchants, instead of taking out the garbage when the collection truck passes, what they do is throw it into the riverbed. So there is no culture of cleanliness. In the end, the road is littered with garbage that obstructs the natural passage of the streams, and that is what happens when they overflow,” he said.

The former official maintains that the solution is in the hands of the authorities, who every year prefer to do the easy job of cleaning despite the fact that it is not enough to solve the problem. “They make a make-up that they are working for the city, but in practice they are not interested in providing a solution,” he assessed.

“The market sector is a disaster when it rains, first of all because the pipe where the water ran has already collapsed, and because they throw out the garbage,” he concluded.
