The evaluation committee of the Legislative Branch released last night an additional list of 3,817 candidates for judges, magistrates and ministers, which added to the 7,060 that it made public around midnight last Sunday, gives 10,877 lawyers who They thus pass the first filter to compete to be on the ballot for the extraordinary election of June 2025.
Another 105 candidates for ministers of the Supreme Court of Justice were included in that added list, among them Marisela Morales, who was Attorney General of Justice during the six-year term of Felipe Calderón; Paula María García Villegas, daughter of the current Morena deputy Olga Sánchez Cordero.
Likewise, the evaluation committee of the Legislative Branch included Sara Irene Herrerías, current human rights prosecutor of the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), into the race for a place on the Supreme Court, against whom there are accusations of protecting who tortured those accused in the disappearance of Isabel Miranda de Wallace’s son.
The additional list includes 83 candidates for magistrates of the Judicial Disciplinary Court, 21 for the two vacant positions of magistrates of the upper chamber of the Electoral Tribunal of the Judiciary (TEPJF) – among them Gabriela Villafuerte Coello, who has a career in that body – and 105 magistrates of regional chambers.
The remainder are candidates for the positions of district judges and circuit magistrates.
If you compare that final list of 10,877 candidates who passed the first test, with the 10,959 that that committee presented, preliminarily, on December 7, it means that only 82 people were eliminated.
The total number is similar to that of the evaluation committee of the Executive Branch, which is 11,014 and well above those of the Judiciary, which reduced from 3,805 registered lawyers and litigants to only 1,046.
Regarding the criticism received for the evaluation committee of the Legislative Branch, for having uploaded the data to its digital site within the deadline, last Sunday the 15th, and for having listed almost 4 thousand additional names yesterday, the president of the Senate, Gerardo Fernández Noroña maintained that what was established in the call for that election of judges next year was complied with.
The problem was that having decided to open three alternative emails meant that they had to review more than 15,000 files, without having the infrastructure of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation and the Executive, explained the members of the evaluation committee.
In the next phase, the suitability of those 10,887 applicants must be analyzed, which includes reviewing their public actions, their sentences if they are members of the Judiciary, their track record, and they have already begun to review information from citizens about some of them. those registered.
