President Claudia Sheinbaum affirmed yesterday that, unlike the strategy of Felipe Calderón, who “declared a war in his own country”, put Genaro García Luna – today imprisoned in the United States for drug trafficking – at the head of it and obtained no results other than a 148 percent increase in intentional homicides during that six-year term, this government is promoting another policy that, she assured, is giving results. “Our strategy is not about war, it is about building peace, and we are going to give more results,” he promised.
In her press conference in the Palace, the president contrasted the security approaches applied by previous governments with those of the Fourth Transformation. He recalled that Calderón took the Army to the streets without a legal framework and allowed extrajudicial executions under the argument of combating drug trafficking. “Who declares a war in their own country? That generated thousands of collateral victims – as he called them –: civilians, girls, boys and young people hit by bullets, and it didn’t matter, according to the then president, because it was part of the war,” he criticized.
Sheinbaum explained that, unlike this policy of confrontation, his government – in continuation of the policy initiated by Andrés Manuel López Obrador – has reduced homicides by 37 percent in the first 13 months of administration, thanks to a model based on intelligence, research, coordination with the states and attention to the social causes of violence.
He acknowledged, however, that “greater results are still lacking” and that events such as the murder of the municipal president of Uruapan “hurt all of Mexico.” He rejected calls for US intervention in the fight against insecurity: “Whoever asks for that is wrong. The last intervention took away half of our territory. Mexico is no one’s colony, we are a sovereign and independent country,” he emphasized.
The President also spoke about her personal safety, after the attack she suffered last week in the Historic Center of Mexico City. She assured that she is protected, that she follows the recommendations of her security cabinet.
“I always accept the recommendations of the Secretary of Security, the Secretary of Defense and the Secretary of the Navy. Sometimes they ask me to have more security, but we do not consider it necessary,” he said.
Regarding the absence of the head of the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic, Alejandro Gertz, in the presentation of the security report, he commented that there is good collaboration with him and that he will be present on future occasions.
