Osorio Chong and Ruiz Massieu challenge the extension of the mandate of "alito" in the PRI

“You should not submit to the manipulation of a person. We are a plural party, which must reflect our values and democratic principles. I reject any decision contrary to this aspiration and I will resort to legal means to reverse this harmful practice,” Ruiz Massieu wrote on Twitter.

While Osorio questioned that the unity that the party needs is not achieved with reforms tailored to one person.

Both published today a part of the document where the presentation of the appeal before the TEPJF is recorded; before which they flaunted as members of the National Political Council for which they have the legal personality to challenge.

What changes did the PRI make?

On December 19, in an extraordinary and virtual session of the PRI’s National Political Council (CPN), a statutory reform was approved that will allow “Alito”, whose partisan presidency ended on August 18, 2023, to remain in office until the end of the the electoral process of 2024, that is, August-September of that year.

The end of his term and the beginning of that electoral process, the first week of September 2024, would almost practically be concurrent, so that before that amendment there was already the possibility that “Alito” would stay in office.

Therefore, it will be able to agree on partisan alliances and decide hundreds of candidacies at stake in 2024, including the presidential one and to elect 500 deputies and 128 senators in addition to nine governorships.

But the electoral reform contained in the so-called “Plan B”, already voted by Congress, contemplates that the beginning of the electoral process be two months later, that is, in November 2023, and not in September, so -according to the statuses– there was the possibility of an internal election in the PRI to renew the leadership and thereby remove “Alito”.
